NGOs Providing COVID-19 Relief in India

There has been an outpouring of requests from our Indiaspora members and the Indian diaspora community regarding organizations to donate to in India at this time. Here is a list of some trusted NGO organizations that are working on different aspects of COVID-19 relief, and how to contribute to their efforts.

ORGANIZATIONS TAKING ACTION & HOW YOU CAN HELP

The following nonprofit organizations are doing amazing work to help those in need in India.

Many are part of the INDIA PHILANTHROPY ALLIANCE (IPA), a coalition of nonprofit, philanthropic, and charitable organizations that mobilize people and funding in the United States (and elsewhere) for development and poverty-reduction programs in India.

 

Medical Supplies / Healthcare

 

The American India Foundation has launched a 3-pronged plan for the second phase of COVID-19 focused on securing oxygen concentrators, ventilators, PPE, and pulse oximeters, setting up portable hospitals, sourcing cold-storage equipment to decentralized vaccine administration, raising awareness about vaccinations and COVID-19 prevention tactics and mitigating nutrition gaps due to COVID-19 with women and children. Antara International supports the delivery of public health innovations to tackle maternal and child mortality, via its partner, The Antara Foundation in India. During COVID, Antara Foundation has supported various COVID response efforts to identify high-risk populations, provide technical training to frontline workers and provide on-site support in Madhya Pradesh. Arogya World is a global health non-profit organization working to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs). During the pandemic, Arogya has focused on advancing the dialogue on workplace health and providing resources and information relating to Covid-19 relief. Learn more here.

Association for India’s Development (AID) is responding to the second wave of COVID-19 with home care support for less severe COVID-19 cases (prone position, pulse oximeters, etc.), helplines to connect with hospitals and available beds for more serious cases, increasing vaccine reach to rural areas and underserved families; also, helping families in poverty who face economic distress due to COVID lockdowns and closing of workplaces, helping families in extreme poverty whose breadwinners have passed away due to COVID or are hospitalized; and a small, targeted program to get oxygen concentrators to smaller hospitals so that they’re not left behind, while everyone is rushing O2 to major cities. BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, UK & Europe in India has expanded its existing provision of hospital and medical centers with a new 500-bed facility in Atladara (in the district of Vadodara), equipped with ICU facilities, provision of life-saving oxygen as well as PPE for medical staff and meals and accommodation for the volunteers, elderly and vulnerable. BAPS in the UK has launched an international emergency campaign to support the BAPS relief efforts across India.

Bharatiya Jain Sanghatana‘s “Mission Rahat Oxygen Lifeline” initiative is providing hospitals with portable oxygen concentrators in cities and states most affected by the oxygen crisis.

The Canadian Red Cross is partnering with the Indian Red Cross on an emergency appeal to raise funds for the India COVID-19 Response. Money raised will enable the Red Cross in India to support COVID-19 preparedness, response, and recovery activities. Please support these international efforts in assisting the Indian people with their challenging fight against COVID-19. The Canada-India Business Council is partnering with them on their efforts to combat the Covid crisis.

The Desai Foundation, which empowers women and children through community programs
to elevate health and livelihood with a focus on 1,000 rural communities in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh & Rajasthan, is focusing on urgent medical interventions, including covering costs for vaccination shots, expanding private hospital capacity, expanding therapeutics, transportation to and from medical care, providing PPE Kits to care facilities, and community-based health interventions, such as COVID relief and isolation centers, masks, and more. India Covid SOS is a great resource to help support this volunteer group of scientists, clinicians, engineers, policy-makers, and epidemiologists from the global community in the fight against Covid-19 in India.

International Association for Human Values in partnership with Art of Living in India is driving a large-scale effort to supply critical equipment to the hospitals. Their teams have established a supply chain to import Oxygen Concentrators (portable machines that generate purified O2 from ambient air) from countries outside of India. An order has been placed for 2000 Oxygen Concentrators, with delivery expected this week. Donations may also be used to supply other critical equipment such as ventilators, beds, etc… depending on how the situation and needs evolve.

Magic Bus USA is launching a COVID Response Fund to help save lives in the communities they serve. They will provide medical support such as life-saving medication, oxygen concentrators, cylinders, etc. with a needs-based approach in partnership with government health systems, agencies specialized in providing such support, and local organizations. All monies raised will be sent to India to assist with the efforts noted above. Magic Bus continues to make a substantial impact on underprivileged youth during the pandemic.

The Save Life Foundation (SLF) is working with the Delhi government to distribute oxygen concentrators to facilities in need in India that are not being served by the first shipments of oxygen expected. The Bay Area Indian community is also supporting this effort.

Sewa International is acquiring oxygen concentrators and shipping them to India and providing support to hospitals run by Sewa’s partner organizations. Their volunteers also are working on building a digital Helpdesk to provide critical information such as ambulance service, hospital bed availability, and blood and medicinal supplies to people. They also will distribute more than 10,000 essential item kits to families, assist more than 1,000 orphanages and senior care centers, and distribute food and medicine as necessary. Learn more here.

Swasth Digital Health Foundation along with ACT Grants and ImpactGuru is looking to procure oxygen concentrators and channel them to hospitals across levels of care in remote areas for COVID response and long-term health system strengthening. These oxygen concentrators can save many thousands of lives and bolster much-needed resources for hospitals. They can also be used to treat outpatients, reducing the load on hospital beds and easing the stress faced by patients.

Swasti Health Catalyst is creating a network of 300+ organizations and 2,000 volunteers to launch COVIDActionCollab (CAC), a fund to test communities for comorbidities, telecare for patients, and COVID care centers. WISH Foundation has been addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in India in partnership with LEHS, a government-compliant, non-profit organization, delivering direct services through their 700 plus clinics across the states of Assam, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, with a reach into 140 million population; as well as providing advisory services and technical support to these states. Food Relief and Livelihood Assistance

 

Aajeevika Bureau has been intensively involved in providing relief to stranded migrant workers, daily wagers, and their households to see them through this period of distress. Our relief included emergency food distribution, cash transfers, health care, and help to workers in distress reaching out to us through our Labour Line. Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International continues to help those who live outside Bodhgaya in remote villages where the poor and vulnerable need help. This month they will be focusing on funding for bulk food, masks, and medicine to those in need especially to the monasteries and local villagers in the Bodhgaya region. These supplies will be distributed to the monasteries and villages by their local network.
