Shamila Batohi

National Director of Public Prosecutions, South Africa

Shamila Batohi is the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) in South Africa, appointed in February 2019.  She began her career as a junior prosecutor in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court in 1986, eventually becoming the Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal. Batohi also served as the first regional head of the Directorate of Special Operations and was a Senior Legal Advisor to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. 

She has focused on addressing high-profile corruption and apartheid-era crimes, highlighting structural and budgetary challenges within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Batohi played a key role in establishing the Investigating Directorate to tackle serious corruption​​​​​​.
