Raj Chouhan is a Canadian politician and trade unionist who has served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Burnaby-Edmonds since 2005. He made history in 2020 by becoming the first South Asian Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, a significant milestone in Canadian politics.
Chouhan’s journey began when he arrived in Canada in 1973 and worked on a farm, where he was fired for advocating for workers’ rights. This experience led him to co-found the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union in 1980, championing the rights and protections of farmworkers. In his political career, Chouhan has held various roles, including Deputy Speaker and Assistant Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
As an MLA, he has been a strong advocate for social justice, labor rights, and fighting against racism. Indiaspora is proud to have Raj Chouhan in our Global Government List.
