Premila Kumar

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development | Fiji

Honourable Premila Devi Kumar, MP is currently the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development in the Government of the Republic of Fiji, since November 2018. Previously, she was also the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism. She is from the Fiji First Party under the very able leadership of the Prime Minister, Honourable Voreqe Bainimarama.

Apart from being a politician, she has had a distinguished career as consumer advocate, trade and investment facilitator, environmentalist, teacher and a teacher educator. Premila was felicitated with Executive Woman of the Year Award in 2015 by Women in Business in Fiji and Fiji Times Award for the Most Influential Woman of the Year 2010.

Premila obtained her Master of Science degree in the area of trade and environment (with Distinction) from the Wageningen University, Netherlands. She has a Bachelor of Science degree (First division) from Sofia College, University of Rajasthan and Post Graduate Diploma in Biology and Post Graduate Certificate in Education from The University of the South Pacific. Honourable Kumar comes from a very well-known business and philanthropic family in Suva. She is married to Jaindra and they have three children, who live and work in Sydney, Australia.
