Ash Kalra is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly, representing District 27 since 2016. His district encompasses parts of San Jose in Santa Clara County. Kalra has a strong background in public service and law, having served on the San Jose City Council prior to his election to the Assembly. He is a staunch advocate for environmental protection, affordable housing, criminal justice reform, and public health. Kalra has a reputation for championing progressive policies, including measures to address climate change and improve public transportation. With a law degree from Georgetown University, he has also worked as a public defender, which has informed his commitment to justice and equity. 

Ash previously served as a San José City Councilmember for eight years and was a deputy public defender in Santa Clara County for 11 years prior to the City Council.
