Amit Mehta

Judge of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia

Judge Amit Mehta currently serves on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, a position he has held since his appointment by President Barack Obama in 2014. Born in India and raised in the U.S., Mehta is one of the few South Asian judges on the federal bench. Before his judicial career, he worked as a public defender in Washington, D.C., and later became a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, where he specialized in complex civil litigation and white-collar defense. In 2021, Mehta was appointed to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), where he reviews national security-related surveillance requests. A graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Virginia School of Law, Judge Mehta is known for his expertise in balancing national security concerns with individual rights.
