Indiaspora, in partnership with Dalberg, recently hosted a round table discussion in Mumbai on ending violence against women and girls, bringing together its members from the corporate, development, and philanthropic sectors. The event featured leaders from pioneering organizations working on this issue as speakers, including Dr. Lakshmi Lingam (a veteran women right’s activist, researcher, expert, professor), Harish Mavani (Men Against Violence and Abuse), Lora Prabhu (Center for Equity and Inclusion), Anuradha Rajan (South Asia Women’s Foundation), and Shailja Mehta (Dasra).
The panel explored many solutions that already exist: innovative approaches, such as sports, social media, and community models to shift harmful gender norms; delivery of community-based high-quality services to survivors; gender sensitization of our medical institutions, police force and justice institutions. But to address this issue the sector needs more, consistent and flexible funding. The speakers emphasized that collective, long-term action is crucial for creating a safer, more equitable India for women and girls.
